MLB Insider Jon Heyman recently stirred the rumor mill with a bold statement about the Toronto Blue Jays’ next big move. According to Heyman, the belief remains that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Blue Jays will figure out a way to put together a deal close to $500 million.

Heyman’s prediction comes when the Blue Jays are under pressure to secure a franchise cornerstone, something they’ve struggled with in the past.
Blue Jays, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Eyeing Mega Deal?
The New York Post reported that the Blue Jays’ final offer before the deadline was around $500 million over 14 years. However, deferrals were involved, which would have dropped the value to between $400-$450 million. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal then reported that Guerrero was reluctant to accept deferrals, then softened the stance. A deal of that pedigree would have given Guerrero one of the three largest contracts in baseball history, behind Juan Soto (15 years, $765 million) and Shohei Ohtani (10 years, $700 million with heavy deferrals).
Breaking the Mold for the Blue Jays
Toronto’s history of underwhelming negotiations has often left them trailing behind when it comes to landing superstar talent. The proposed $500 million deal for Guerrero would mark a dramatic shift in the franchise’s approach to free agency and long-term player retention. By finally stepping up their efforts and investing heavily in a marquee player, the Blue Jays could set a new standard.
The Blue Jays are banking on an offseason spent adding Anthony Santander, Andres Gimenez and Jeff Hoffman, along with last summer’s trade deadline haul. A mesh of that will make hanging onto Guerrero and potentially Bo Bichette for their walk years worthwhile. If not, the Blue Jays will need to pivot to sell before the trade deadline.
