The Cincinnati Reds received some positive news Thursday as Austin Hays was sent to Triple-A Louisville for a rehab assignment following a low-grade left calf strain sustained at the end of spring training. While he likely won’t need much time to regain full strength, Hays may spend a few more days in Louisville to get some at-bats before being activated from the 10-day injured list. With Gavin Lux having recently taken over as the Reds’ primary second baseman in the wake of Matt McLain landing on the IL, Hays could have a near-everyday role in left field waiting for him once he’s cleared to rejoin Cincinnati.
Austin Hays to Begin Rehab Assignment Thursday
Hays was one of the Reds’ key acquisitions this past offseason, making an immediate impact during spring training. He posted a .310 batting average and led the team with 14 RBI, which included two doubles, two triples and three home runs. The strong performance from Hays was a welcome sign, especially after a 2024 season marred by injuries while playing for the Baltimore Orioles and Philadelphia Phillies. It was a spring of good health for Hays, offering hope for a more productive and injury-free 2025 season.
The Reds Offense Has Been Dreadful Without Hays
The Reds offense has been a major struggle so far this season. As a team, they’re hitting .206/.267/.329 for a 63 wRC+, the lowest in the majors. Outside of two offensive outbursts, the Reds have averaged only 1.75 runs per game. These inconsistent offensive performances have overshadowed some solid pitching, as the staff ranks fourth in ERA (3.15) and seventh in FIP (3.52). The rotation has been particularly strong, sitting third in both ERA (2.81) and FIP (2.85).
Meanwhile, the bullpen has been shaky, especially with closer Alexis Díaz sidelined by a left hamstring strain, posting a 3.86 ERA and 4.91 FIP. However, the bullpen’s struggles have taken a backseat to the faltering offense. With the Reds returning to Great American Ball Park with a 5-8 record, tough losses, including Wednesday’s defeat (where they squandered a 6-1 lead to lose 8-6 in extras), offer a harsh reminder of the need for offensive improvement.
