One of few bright spots for the White Sox in 2024 is getting the recognition he deserves.
This afternoon, with the announcement of all-star rosters, it was revealed that starting pitcher Garrett Crochet has been named to the American League All-Star team for the first time in his career.
Crochet, 25, is in his first year as a starting pitcher after being drafted 11th overall in the 2020 MLB Draft. There had been some doubts that Crochet would ever be a starter at the major league level – especially because the White Sox decided to make him a reliever for the majority of his career up to this point when the team was attempting to compete. With new chances given this season, Crochet has more than proven his doubters wrong, posting a 3.08 ERA across 105.1 innings and 19 starts. His 5.5% walk rate is well below the 11.7% and 20.3% walk rates he posted in 2021 and 2023 respectively.
The journey for Crochet has been incredible, given that he missed all of 2022 and most of 2023 recovering from Tommy John Surgery. Crochet has been the subject, naturally, of many trade rumors throughout the season, with the Dodgers, Padres, and Mariners among those interested in acquiring Crochet’s services over the course of the next couple of seasons.
For now, it’s great to appreciate Crochet and his representation as the team’s only all-star in a brutal campaign. He’s certainly been one of few bright spots. It has not been announced who will start the All-Star Game for the American League – but there is a good chance that Crochet is at least being considered.
