Kane Child Advocacy Center welcomes comfort dog Captain
The Kane County Child Advocacy Center and the Kane County State’s Attorney Office have sworn in their newest officer — Captain, a 2-year-old labrador retriever trained to provide comfort and support to children during criminal investigations.
The dog joined the center in January 2025 and will serve as the center’s first facility dog, according to a news release.
Captain comes to the center from Duo Dogs Inc., a St. Louis-based nonprofit that’s placed more than 200 dogs with people and organizations across the country since 1981, according to its website.
“Captain’s presence will provide comfort, compassion and companionship to children seeking protection and justice through the Child Advocacy Center,” State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser said in the release.
Prior to Captain’s arrival, the center would borrow a facility dog, Forrest, from the Kane County Treatment Court. Forest retired in June 2024. Captain will provide emotional support to children during forensic interviews, court preparation and courtroom proceedings, including while giving testimony, the release said.
The dog’s ongoing costs are funded by the nonprofit Friends of the Kane County Child Advocacy Center. For more information, go to kanecountyil.gov and duodogs.org/about.
