A few nuggets — @SoxNerd style — on Elvis Andrus’ 2,000th hit, which occurred during the White Sox win over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday at Guaranteed Rate Field.
*The single in the fifth inning off Logan Webb made Andrus the 293rd player in big league history to record 2,000 hits
*Andrus is the fourth active player with 2,000 hits. The others: Miguel Cabrera (3,090), Joey Votto (2,093) and Nelson Cruz (2,018)
*Andrus became the 16th player to record his 2,000th hit in a Sox uniform and the first since Juan Pierre on Sept. 8, 2011 at then-named U.S. Cellular Field
*Andrus got the hit as a shortstop after starting the game at second base. He moved to the position he played for the first 14 years of his career after Tim Anderson was ejected.
Andrus joins Hall-of-Famers “Gorgeous” George Davis (Sept. 14, 1902), Luke Appling (Aug. 12, 1943) and Luis Aparicio (May 15, 1969) as shortstops to log hit No. 2,000 with the White Sox.
*Other players to get their 2,000th hit with the Sox were Eddie Collins, Harry Hooper, Al Simmons, Jimmy Dykes, Nellie Fox, Minnie Minoso, Carlton Fisk, Tim Raines, Frank Thomas, Jim Thome and Paul Konerko.
*For years, Minoso was not the list of those who recorded hit No. 2,000 in Sox yarns.
However, since MLB added Negro League stats to its official records in 2020, it was determined that Minoso did record his 2,000th hit with the White Sox with a single against the New York Yankees on Sept. 14, 1961 at Comiskey Park.
Thanks to the great Chris Kamka for pointing this out to me.
*The first player to notch No. 2000 with the Sox was Davis with a single vs. Detroit on Sept. 14, 1902 at South Side Park.
*Five of the last six players who posted their 2,000th hit with the Sox did so at Guaranteed Rate Field. The only Sox player to get hit No. 2,000 on the road since GRF opened was Konerko, who did it in Anaheim on Aug. 23, 2011.
*Andrus became the 10th Sox player to get his 2,000th hit with a single. Collins (double), Dykes (double), Appling (triple), Raines (homer), Thomas (homer) and Thome (double) used extra-base hits for No. 2,000.
*Andrus is the 10th native of Venezuela to reach the milestone.
*Who’s next? Anderson ranks second to Andrus among active Sox players with 907 hits.
