While the White Sox enjoy some time off, here’s a look at what happened on this date in team history:
*1906, GOOD START AT HOME FOR FUTURE CHAMPS: Bill O’Neill led off the first with a double and scored on future Hall of Famer “Gorgeous George” Davis’ single to send the future World Series champion White Sox (aka “The Hitless Wonders”) to a 6-1 win over Detroit in the home opener before 14,100 at South Side Park. Nick Altrock struck out three and walked one for the complete game win.
*1912, A SCORELESS K-FEST IN ST. LOUIS: Jim “Death Valley” Scott fanned 13 batters in the White Sox 15-inning scoreless tie with the Browns in St. Louis. At the time, the 13 strikeouts were tied for sixth place on the White Sox single-season list.
*1945, LO AND BEHOLD, THEY’RE 3-0: Roy Schalk’s double in the 10th lifted the Sox to a 3-2 win over St. Louis for their first 3-0 start since 1936 before 3,649 at Comiskey Park. Eddie Lopat started, went the distance, homered and got the win in the 2 hour and 7 minute contest.
*1951, 3-0 FOR GO GO: Randy Gumpert tossed a three-hitter and drove in two in the White Sox 5-0 win over Tigers before 8,731 in the Comiskey Park opener. Gumpert walked three and fanned two as the Sox improved to 3-0 for the first time since 1947.
*1954, TOP HEAVY: Chico Carrasquel and Nellie Fox, the top two hitters in the order, were a combined 5-for-9 with four RBIs as the Sox won their fourth straight with a 7-2 win at Detroit. Minnie Minoso homered and Virgil Trucks went the distance for his first win.
*1956, NORTHEY IN A PINCH: The first of Ron Northey’s club-record three pinch- homers delivered the White Sox a 6-3 win at Kansas City. Pinch-hitting for Luis Aparicio, Northey’s blast was a three-run shot in the ninth. His record would be tied by John Romano in 1956 and Oscar Gamble in 1977.
*1957, WINNING A WILD ONE: Sherm Lollar’s two-run double in the ninth finally gave the Sox the lead for good in a wild 11-7 win over the A’s before 7,795 at Comiskey Park. Lollar’s five RBIs and four scoreless innings by reliever Dixie Howell made the Sox 3-0 for the second consecutive season. It marked the first time the Sox started back-to-back seasons 3-0.
*1961, SENATOR SUCCESS: Roy Sievers, Jim Landis and Al Smith homered as the White Sox posted their first win over the expansion Washington Senators at Comiskey Park with a 6-1 victory. Early Wynn went the distance for his first win of the season and the 285th of his career.
*1963, A SWISH SLAM: Dave Nicholson hit a grand slam and drove in five in the Sox 10-7 win over the Twins before 7,137 at Comiskey Park. Frank Baumann got the win with 3.2 innings of shutout relief as the Sox won for the third straight day.
*1969, GROUNDING THE PILOTS: Bill Melton’s walkoff homer in the 10th delivered the White Sox a 3-2 win over the Seattle Pilots in the first game of a doubleheader before 12,579 at Comiskey Park. Melton hit one of the Sox four homers as the team completed a sweep with a 13-3 win in the nightcap.
*1971, HELPING HIS OWN CAUSE: Bart Johnson drove in three and went the distance in the Sox 7-1 win in Milwaukee. Two of Johnson’s RBI came on a double in a three-run second that gave the Sox the lead for good. Johnson gave up eight hits for his second win of the year.
*1973, A ROYAL BEATING: Bill Melton homered and drove in five and Mike Andrews plated three runs as the White Sox hammered the Royals 16-2 in Kansas City for their biggest offensive output in three years. The Sox scored eight times in the first two innings to make things easy on starter Stan Bahnsen, who went the distance for his first win. The last time the Sox scored more than 16 runs was in a 22-13 victory on May 31, 1970 at Boston.
*1977, SOX BEAT NOLAN RYAN: Eric Soderholm homered and drove in two in the White Sox 3-2 win over the Angels and Nolan Ryan in Anaheim. Chris Knapp improved to 2-0 by fanning seven in six innings and Lerrin LaGrow earned his third save as the Sox moved to 7-3 for their best 10-game start since 1972.
*1979 WHAT A RELIEF HE IS: Mike Proly fashioned 3.1 scoreless innings of relief and was rewarded with a victory in the White Sox 4-2 win in 10 innings at Cleveland. The Sox took the lead in the 10th on RBIs by Claudell Washington and Thad Bosley.
*1980, BIG NINTH: MARV FOLEY!: Marv Foley’s ninth-inning single broke a 6-6 tie and sent the White Sox to a 9-6 win at Baltimore. Mike Squires and Harry Chappas added RBIs later in the frame. Rookie Harold Baines posted his first career four-hit game by going 4-for-5 with three doubles.
*1987, BREWERS STREAK AT SOX EXPENSE: The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the White Sox 5-4 at Comiskey Park to run their season-opening win streak to 13, tying a big league record. Chuck Crim got the win while Jose DeLeon took the loss. Many of the 24,019 on hand were Brewer fans who made the trek down I-94 from Wisconsin.
*1994, RAINES ON BASE: Tim Raines became just the sixth player in American League history to reach base safely in seven consecutive plate appearances in the White Sox 8-6 win in 12 innings at Milwaukee. Raines had three singles and four walks in becoming the first A.L. player to accomplish the feat since George Brett on June 27, 1985. Julio Franco broke a 6-6 tie with an RBI single in the 12th and Roberto Hernandez pitched three innings for his first win of the.
*1999, RAIN, MARINERS GO AWAY: Jim Parque got through the first inning on five pitches en route to the win in the Sox 3-1 win over Seattle before 8,980 at Comiskey Park. In the quick first, Parque got two flyball outs and K’d Ken Griffey Jr. on three pitches after the Sox waited out a 70-minute rain delay.
*2002, HEY PAULIE: Paul Konerko’s grand slam highlighted a 15-hit outburst in a 12-5 win over Detroit at Comiskey Park. Jose Valentin, Frank Thomas and Magglio Ordonez also homered as the Sox improved to 11-6.
*2007, RELIEF IN MOTOWN: Nick Masset, David Aardsma, Matt Thornton, Mike MacDougal and Bobby Jenks combined on 4.1 shutout innings in helping the Sox win 5-4 at Detroit. After John Danks failed to get out through the fifth, the pen held the Tigers at bay while the offense mustered up enough to squeeze out a win. Darin Erstad’s RBI in the seventh put the Sox on top to stay and handed Masset his first big league win.
*2010, THE PRICE IS RIGHT FOR SOX: John Danks gave up two hits and fanned nine in eight innings in outdueling David Price in the White Sox 4-1 win over Tampa Bay before 19,260 at U.S. Cellular Field. The Sox took the lead for good in the second on Alex Rios’ run-scoring triple. Andruw Jones and Paul Konerko homered as he Sox halted a four-game skid.
*2012, ON SALE: In his third career start, Chris Sale fanned 11 in 6.1 innings for the win in the White Sox 7-3 victory at Seattle. Sale gave up three runs on seven hits with three walks to improve to 2-1. Adam Dunn clubbed two homers, including a lead-providing two-run shot in the.
*2014, EVERYTHING IS BIG IN TEXAS: The White Sox got home runs from Jordan Danks, Jose Abreu and Dayan Viciedo and four RBI from Marcus Semien in smashing the host Texas Rangers 16-2. The White Sox finished by hanging seven runs on Hector Noesi in the ninth.
