The Toronto Blue Jays outfield situation has been shaken up this season, but has Nathan Lukes done enough to keep himself in the lineup? With Daulton Varsho starting the season on the IL and continuing to rehab with his shoulder, the Blue Jays have had to shake up the outfield. Nathan Lukes competed with Joey Loperfido and Addison Barger for a spot on the roster this season and earned a bench role.
The 30-year-old can play all outfield positions and has showcased promise with his defense early this season. But he’s only batted .158 with three hits and three RBI across 19 at-bats this season. According to Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith, Varsho is progressing with his rehab and will commence with throwing in Dunedin next week. This makes his return to the Blue Jays that much closer. This means the Blue Jays will have more shuffling to do with their roster and outfield situation when he returns.
Lukes’ Defense Yay, but His Offense Nay

The 30-year-old outfielder has demonstrated himself as a solid defender for the Blue Jays this season. Against the Red Sox, he made a catch similar to Varsho crashing into the wall to make a spectacular catch. Varsho is on a good pace to return at the end of April, likely, which means that someone will need to be sent down. While Lukes has more experience, Alan Roden has made a lasting impression with his offense.

Losing his bat in the lineup would be unfortunate. Roden also made an impressive diving catch in the outfield on March 28th. Roden is a rookie and would benefit from more experience in the minors. However, considering the flat offense that Lukes has provided, keeping Roden as a bench player would benefit the Blue Jays overall. The offensive upside with Roden has been exciting to watch this season. He’s already demonstrated a strong ability to turn the lineup over, being in the No. 9 spot. Myles Straw is another player who also comes into play. Straw is a 2022 Gold Glove winner who is also a base-stealing threat. Having Straw play center field, George Springer in right, and Varsho left would be a dominant outfield.
While Lukes provides flexibility in playing all outfield positions, sometimes upside potential wins over experience. Experience is a valuable asset to have as a baseball player. But with the way rookies have been making a lasting impression in MLB, a rookie’s potential and the upsides they have to offer can overpower a player with experience. Roden has been tested early this season, and giving him the chance to showcase his talent has been beneficial, as well as helping him develop and set up a bright future.
