Tuesday will be Seattle’s third All-Star Game.
Just like this year with Luis Robert Jr., the Sox sent only one representative to the previous Mid-Summer Classics in Seattle.
And just like this year, the Sox previous Seattle stars were reserve outfielders.
Here a look at how Chet Lemon fared in 1979 and how Magglio Ordonez did in 2001 representing the Sox in Seattle star gathering:
*CHET LEMON, 1979: Named to his second consecutive (and final) All-Star team for the A.L’s 7-6 loss. . … First Sox outfielder and center fielder since Tommie Agee in 1965 and 1966 to make consecutive All-Star appearances. … Replaced an ailing Fred Lynn (groin) in center field in the bottom of the second and played the rest of the game. … Went 0-for-2 with a run, a walk and a strikeout. … Hit by a Joaquin Andujar pitch with two out in the third to become the first White Sox batter to be hit by a pitch in an All-Star Game. … Scored on a Mike Schmidt error. … Drew a walk off the Cubs’ Bruce Sutter, who would go on to win the Cy Young Award, with two out in the ninth but was left on first when Rick Burleson struck out to end the game. … Handled two chances (both putouts) without an error.
*MAGGLIO ORDONEZ, 2001: Named as a reserve to his third consecutive All-Star team for the A.L.’s 4-1 win. … Became the third Sox outfielder to make at least three straight All-Star appearances (Al Simmons, 1933-35, and Minnie Minoso, 1951-54 were the others). … Entered the game in left field in the fourth and played the rest of the game. … Went 2-for-3 with a homer, a single and an RBI. … Followed Derek Jeter’s homer to leadoff the sixth with a homer of his own off the Cubs’ Jon Lieber. … Became the second Sox player to homer in an All-Star Game (Thomas 1995) and teamed with Jeter to hit the fifth back-to-back home runs in All-Star history. … Singled off future Sox pitcher Jeff Shaw to lead off the eighth. … Only player with two hits in this game. … Handled four chances (all putouts) without an error.
