A year ago, Javier Mogollón played both shortstop and second base for the DSL White Sox, but worked at shortstop almost exclusively in his first season Stateside. And just as important as moving to the most important spot in the infield was the mini-mite’s hitting ability translating against older competition in the ACL.
Mogollón mashed in his first pro season — and mostly kept that up in his first Stateside season, despite tougher competition and falling much younger than ACL level. Among some ACL White Sox mainstays, Mogollón topped the team in OPS (.930), slugging (.525), on-base (.406), homers (eight) and doubles (14). Pay attention in particular to that slugging percentage, because Mogollón is not only defying expectations vis-a-vis his stature, he’s zagging into the gaps while far too many White Sox prospects have been zigging away from a power game.
And the young fella (still a teenager, yeah) still has his quicks: While he didn’t lead the Complex Sox in steals, he swiped 16 without being caught.
In the field, he logged 40 games at short (five at second base) and held his own well enough; 10 errors are dismal, but not out of line for an 18-year-old adjusting to his toughest competition yet and in his first weeks on American soil.
Yes, the ACL is the definition of small sample size. That said, despite shortstop being by far the most talent-laden spot in the White Sox org, Mogollón could be the most exciting one of all.

Mogollón is still so young that he might not break camp with Kannapolis; for reasons of endurance, or perhaps even defense, the organization might want to truncate his first full season a bit. However, there is no obvious on-field reason why Mogollón shouldn’t be playing in April as a Cannon Baller.
