As a starter, things were rough; in relief this righthander is soaring toward the South Side

Due to the laziness of this author (yes, South Side Sox has run out of gas for two straight years and not counted all the way up to the No. 1 prospect, sigh), this is actually the first time we’ve gotten around to writing up Peyton Pallette in the Top 100.
Perhaps in this case it was astute foresight, because in spite of his ranking taking a precipitous slip of some 20 spots this year, 2024 represented Pallette’s first true success as a pro. It took a role change, from TJS-recovering starter to incendiary reliever, to get the former Razorback some true footing in the game.
From the jump, Pallette was a bold/risk pick, given he’d missed the entire 2022 season healing his arm after surgery. He’d only had one full season at the University of Arkansas, and not a particularly great one. So the White Sox were essentially picking the potential of the Benton (Ark.) High School superstar, rather than the rough road traveled as a collegian.
Wished as they might, the White Sox simply could not see through experimenting with Pallette as a starter. He proved his sturdiness in 2023, Pallette’s first foray into the minors, with 22 starts at Kannapolis, but they were a little rough, too wild … and things got worse.
Pallette got a warranted bump from Kanny to Winston-Salem, but things went horrifically for the righthander in the rotation. By the time he was sent to the pen at the end of June, the second-rounder had made quite a mess of things: 1-7, 7.21 ERA, 3.6 innings per start.
But getting demoted to the pen, boy howdy, turned Pallette’s career around. He saw action in 20 games in relief (roughly half after a promotion to Double-A), and left batters crying for mercy: 1.16 ERA, 5.1 K/BB, .136 batting average against, .182 slugging percentage against.
Pallette has found his role, and my goodness did he ever settle into it.

I know, I know, I know, it’s just a 20-game sample. Pallette is unlikely to see the South Side in 2025, especially with similarly qualifies righty rocket-launchers like Adisyn Coffey and Eric Adler ahead of him on the ladder and yet to make their debuts. But stranger streaks to the majors have happened, and if Pallette keeps grinding down batters in the minors like he did in the second half of 2024 all bets against him are off.
