At just 17 years old, middle-infielder William Bergolla was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies, following in his father’s footsteps as he attempted to make it to the major leagues. He made a great first impression upon joining the Phillies DSL team in 2022, batting .380 with an .893 OPS in his first 24 games. He then spent time in Philadelphia’s Low- and High-A levels in 2023 and 2024, respectively, before he was traded to the Chicago White Sox last July in exchange for the southpaw reliever, Tanner Banks.

The 19-year-old has a .735 OPS with 18 stolen bases in High-A this season.

Bergolla’s 2023 season wasn’t as strong offensively, posting a significantly lower OPS (.693) and BA (.255) in 55 games, however, he struck out at an extremely low rate (7.5%), and average 1.76 walks per strikeouts (a 13.2% BB%). Bergolla’s strikeout and walk rates nearly flip-flopped into 2024, but his offensive production was much more efficient in 67 games for High-A Phillies affiliate the Jersey Shore BlueClaws. Prior to being traded to the Sox, Bergolla racked up 69 hits and slashed .295/.350/.385 — so while he wasn’t blasting extra-base hits, he was consistently getting on base.
William was just as good as he transitioned to the Dash in early August, and in 22 games there he ended up with a .755 OPS while batting .316 with a 121 wRC+. He struck out at a fairly low rate once again — just eight times in his 76 PAs at a 8.9% K% — and still averaged (albeit very slightly) more walks per strikeouts. The great news is that he is still very young at just 20 years old, so he has plenty of time to refine his game and become an even more effective piece of the offense.
Looking at the LD% and SwStr% of White Sox hitters in high A, its clear the team had great bat to ball skills. Gonzalez exceled at both metrics. Zavala had much improved bat to ball skills. The other thing that makes Bergolla a weapon is his ability to steal bases. Last season he stole 18 in 67 games with the Phillies organization, and banked half of those (nine) with the Dash in just 22 games to close out the season. He was safe 81% of the time, well above average and past the bar that makes base-stealing worthwhile in run production.
On the defensive end, Bergolla has been solid all around. He played the majority of his 2024 games with the BlueClaws at second base and made just three errors in 458 innings and 187 chances. Second base seems to be his stronger position, as he tends to have the highest FLD% there across pretty much every level he has played thus far, so naturally Bergolla mostly played shortstop for Winston-Salem. At short, he blundered two balls in 67% fewer chances than before he was traded. He has plenty of time to evolve in both positions, and I’d expect him to get some more time experimenting around the infield as he matures as a player — potentially landing at second down the line.

While hitting for power is clearly not currently his strong suit, Bergolla has increased the amount of extra-base hits each season, and posted 18 in 2024 — 12 more than his previous season. In any event, he covers off in that area with his ability to make contact and get on base at a high level. William has plenty of time to develop into a more well-rounded player, but he is on a great path right now.
We can probably expect to see him start the year with a return to Winston-Salem, with the potential getting to Double-A Birmingham at his rate of growth and consistency.
