The White Sox selected Blake Larson with the 68th overall pick in the 2024 Amateur Draft out of IMG Academy. This was a Competitive Balance Round B pick that was acquired from Seattle as part of the package that sent Gregory Santos out west last offseason.
The Des Moines native pitched two seasons for Dowling Catholic H.S. before moving to Florida to pitch for IMG. This, according to Blake himself, was in an effort to be seen more by pro scouts. He was slated to attend TCU and pitch for the Horned Frogs in 2025 before he signed with the Sox for $1.4 million.
The prep southpaw fits a mold that the Sox have been targeting for a while now — lefthanders with good stuff that plays up due to a low-slot, abnormal release point. He features a low- to mid-90s fastball and a wipeout slider with big, two-plane break. Further development of his changeup, or potentially a cutter, would certainly have been part of Larson’s 2025 season as he gets integrated with a plan set forward by Brian Bannister.
Why the conditional? Well, apparently, Larson is injured. He is in camp with the White Sox, but is wearing a support brace that is akin to “forearm soreness”when it comes to possible TJS procedures.
Somewhat regardless of injury status, there’s plenty of projection left for Larson, who will remain a teenager through 2025. Despite the organization’s player development struggles that helped manifest a 41-win 2024 season, they’ve made out pretty well taking funky lefties like Larson and getting the most out of them. This makes Larson one of the more intriguing prospects to follow in the near future.
