Shortstop Caleb Bonemer shows a lot of potential, and he makes his debut at No. 17 in our rankings. The White Sox drafted Bonemer in the second round in 2024. Bonemer has not played any professional games, and he was drafted out of high school in Okemos, Mich. His drafting by the White Sox may have been predestined: On the day Bonemer was born, fellow infielder Tadahito Iguchi launched a three-run homer, and the White Sox defeated Boston, 5-4, in Game 2 of the 2005 ALDS.
In both his junior and senior seasons, Bonemer earned the Gatorade Michigan Player of the Year award. Bonemer signed with the White Sox for $2,997,500 rather than attending the University of Virginia.
Bonemer was drafted as a shortstop, although it is unclear if he will be able to remain at that position. FanGraphs is pessimistic about Bomemer’s fielding, as his draft profile suggests he might not even end up in the infield. MLB Pipeline has a more positive outlook about Bonemer’s defense, suggesting that third base might be the best fit, noting that his arm works in his favor. Perhaps more importantly, Bonemer has a quick bat that generates a substantial amount of power.
