CHICAGO — The Cubs are signing veteran free agent third baseman Justin Turner, according to multiple reports.
Patrick Mooney with The Athletic reports that the deal is for $6 million for one year.
Turner, who turned 40 last November, is a much cheaper alterative to Alex Bregman, who the Cubs recently missed on after he signed with Boston for $40 million per year.
He was a bit of a late bloomer, bursting onto the scene as a 30-year-old with the Dodgers in 2015. Turner was selected as an all-star with Los Angeles in 2017 and 2021.
He was named the 2017 NLCS MVP over the Cubs and won a World Series with L.A. in 2020.
Turner put up a great season in 2023 with the Red Sox and played for Toronto and Seattle last season with a .259/.354/.383 clip with 11 home runs.
He will likely compete with top prospect Matt Shaw for the everyday third base job. Turner adds another veteran presence to the clubhouse and will be a solid depth piece if Shaw wins due to his ability to limit strikeouts.
The Cubs play the Dodgers Thursday to open the Spring Training schedule.
