
Knoxville wins. The Pelicans narrowly avoid getting no-hit. South Bend loses its 8th straight.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs were rained out today in Des Moines. They make it up as part of a doubleheader sometime during the Saints series at Iowa from May 13 to 18.
Knoxville Smokies
The Knoxville Smokies got in the eyes of the Chattanooga Lookouts (Reds), 3-0.
Grant Kipp got the win with five innings, allowing just two hits. He issued two walks and hit one batter. Kipp struck out six.
Four pitchers finished out the four-hit shutout. Cayne Ueckert threw one inning and Mitchell Tyranski pitched 1.2. Will Jensen finished out the eighth inning with one pitch, leading to a line out to right.
A.J. Puckett came on to pitch the ninth and got the save. He walked the first batter of the inning, but then retired the next three to end the game. Puckett struck out one.
Third baseman BJ Murray Jr. hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, his fifth of the season, third of the series and fourth in his last seven games. Murray was 1 for 4.
Shortstop Hayden Cantrelle tripled to lead off the bottom of the fifth and scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher Casey Opitz. Both players were 1 for 2.
First baseman Haydn McGeary came off the injured list and was 2 for 3.

South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs went down like the Edmund Fitzgerald against the West Michigan Whitecaps (Tigers), 5-3. It was South Bend’s eighth-straight loss.
Kenten Egbert took the loss after surrendering four runs on nine hits over four innings. He struck out three, walked one and hit one batter.
South Bend scored all three runs on a home run by left fielder Andy Garriola in the fourth inning. It was Garriola’s third-straight game with a home run and his fourth overall. Garriola went 1 for 4.
Right fielder Ivan Brethowr was 2 for 2 with two walks. He scored once.
Center fielder Carter Trice went 2 for 3.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans landed in the sand trap against the Augusta GreenJackets (Braves), 4-1.
Brooks Caple was the hard-luck loser. He went five strong innings and allowed just one run on five hits. He walked three and struck out five.
Kevin Valdez threw the final three innings and gave up three runs on four hits and three walks. He struck out just one.
The Pelicans didn’t have a hit in this game until catcher Owen Ayers led off the top of the ninth inning with a double. Then first baseman Cameron Sisneros doubled him home for the Pelicans only run. That was it for the Myrtle Beach offense, however. Ayers was 1 for 3 and was hit by a pitch. Sisneros went 1 for 4.
