Far too young, only 37.
Brian Matusz pitched in exactly one game for the Cubs.
I have tremendously sad news to report to you about him:
Very sad to hear that former #orioles pitcher Brian Matusz passed away this morning. Was 37. 4th-overall pick in 2008 draft.

That’s far too young for anyone to leave this life.
As noted above, he was chosen fourth overall in 2008, one pick after Eric Hosmer, one pick before Buster Posey. The Cubs selected Andrew Cashner in that round.
You likely remember the game Matusz started for the Cubs. They were in need of an emergency starter in July 2016, I can’t recall the reason.
And so he started July 31, 2016 at Wrigley Field against the Mariners, a game featured on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. It did not go well for Brian. He threw three innings and allowed six runs — three two-run homers, one in each of the first three innings, by Nelson Cruz, Robinson Cano and Dae-Ho Lee.
Then he was lifted and that’s the extent of his Cubs career.
Here is one of his two K’s as a Cub, of Cano in the second inning [VIDEO].
(Although, as you can see, that pitch was probably a bit outside.)
Of course, you remember that game because the Cubs mounted a tremendous comeback and won 7-6 in 12 innings on a walkoff bunt by Jon Lester.
So, we always said in good humor, “The Cubs won the only game Matusz started for them!” And, of course, he got a World Series ring for his single appearance.
To get a bit more serious, 37 is far too young. My deepest condolences to Matusz’ family and friends. May his memory be for a blessing.
