Cubs players, past and present, and fans are gathered at the Sheraton Grand in downtown Chicago.
Sammy Sosa was welcomed back to the Cubs family Friday night at the Opening Ceremony of the Cubs Convention, and at the same time, Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts announced that Sosa and Derrek Lee would be the newest inductees to the Cubs Hall of Fame, with a ceremony to be held at Wrigley Field later this year.
Interestingly enough, that ceremony will be on Lee’s 50th birthday, Sept. 6, before the Cubs host the Washington Nationals.
More details on the first day of CubsCon can be found in Sara Sanchez’ BCB After Dark late Friday edition.
I did want to say that I thought Ryne Sandberg, who got the biggest ovation of anyone Friday night, looked great, considering he is again undergoing cancer treatment. All the best to Ryno. Lee Smith, who had a heart transplant last summer, also looked great.
Sara will have coverage later today of the baseball management session featuring Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer and general manager Carter Hawkins, and also the session with Cubs manager Craig Counsell.
Mainly, I just wanted to post this as an open thread for convention and other baseball discussion for your Saturday. Have at it.
