The Cubs go for the series win.
Wednesday notes:
- WINNING AND LOSING IN SAN DIEGO: The Cubs have won 17 series at San Diego by two games to one. They have lost 27 series, two games to one. But they are 12-12 in third games after splitting the first two, including 6-6 after losing the first game and winning second, as they have Monday and Tuesday. Last year, the Cubs lost, won and lost. They lost, won and won most recently in 2015 and 2021. Those are their only such patterns since 1992. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- CUBS STAT RANKINGS: Runs, 122 (1st). Doubles, 36 (1st). Triples, 5 (T-1st, Tigers). Home runs, 26 (4th). OBP, .345 (4th). SLG, .436 (5th). OPS, .788 (5th). Total bases, 308 (1st).
- STREAKING: Kyle Tucker failed to reach base in the opener in Tokyo, but has reached base in all 19 games since. Numbers in those 19 games: .329/.446/.632 (25-for-76) with eight doubles, five home runs, 19 runs scored and 18 RBI.
- ALSO HOT: Pete Crow-Armstrong, last 12 games since April 2: .319/.360/.574 (15-for-47) with four doubles, a triple, two home runs, six stolen bases and nine runs scored.

Matthew Boyd, LHP vs. Nick Pivetta, RHP

Matthew Boyd has been just outstanding so far this year, allowing just three total runs in 17 innings, all of those runs as a result of a three-run homer by Tommy Edman in his last start, last Friday against the Dodgers.
He held the Padres scoreless for six innings April 5 at Wrigley Field, his only career start against them. A repeat performance would be great.
Nick Pivetta allowed the Cubs six hits, three walks and three runs in just three innings April 5 at Wrigley Field. In his next start after that, he held the Rockies to three hits and no runs in seven innings, with 10 strikeouts. But, you know, Rockies, so… hoping for a repeat of that April 5 performance.
