CHICAGO — With a 21-game losing streak behind them and a nearly brand new coaching staff in place, baseball fans chimed in before the Chicago White Sox matchup against the Cubs in part two of the Crosstown Classic Friday.
“It’s not surprising. With that big of a losing streak, it’s kind of to be expected,” said Marvin Morris, a Cubs fan. “That wide of a gap and that many losses, they had to shake something up, shake something loose.”
At 28-89 heading into Friday night’s game, the White Sox are in the middle of the worst season in franchise history, and one of the worst seasons in MLB history.
Yesterday, the Southsiders fired manager Pedro Grifol after less than two seasons with the team.
Grady Sizemore will now serve as the team’s interim manager for the rest of the season.
Fans told WGN News the team has been hard to watch, but both sides of the fandom in Chicago agree with the move for new leadership, they want to see them end the season on a higher note.
“Hopefully they bring somebody that’s going to turn things around get these guys fired up,” said Steven Baisley, a White Sox fan.
Despite being down early in Friday’s game, the White Sox made it interesting and cut their deficit to one late in the game. However, the Southsiders failed to push across the tying run with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, losing 7-6.
The Crosstown Classic continues Saturday at 6:15 p.m.
