His power and speed are evident. He can go get ‘em in the outfield. If he makes contact, the ball goes a long way. Can he make enough contact to be effective, or to reach his awesome potential? El Jaguar thinks so.
Kevin Alcántara is going to be a star in the game of baseball. Just ask him. He will smile and agree, and then go swat a ball 500 feet. Or take the extra base in four or five strides, his huge frame covering ground easily.

It’s easy to see what the Cubs see in him. Sahadev Sharma says he is going to be a superstar {$}. Sammy loves him.
Alcántara and Owen Caissie are two-thirds of the Cubs’ future outfield. The Cubs would like to have them both dominate Triple-A, get a ton of at-bats, and get a cuppa when it’s time. That could be next year, if Kyle Tucker doesn’t re-sign. If he does, one or the other could be moved.
El Jaguar has but 10 at-bats in the Majors. His track record in the minors and in Fall Leagues looks pretty good, though. In the minor leagues, he’s slashed .281/.354/.449, with 48 home runs and 260 RBI over 1,520 at-bats. Good but not EXPLOSIVE, which is what the Cubs want to see this year. Alcantara clearly has 30-40 home run power. His walk rate in 2024 was about 10 percent. That needs work. Only ZIPS projected Alcantara to start in the Major Leagues this year. I don’t think he will, unless there are drastic injury troubles.
Iowa is going to be good this year. Alcantara and Caissie flanking Greg Allen is a an imposing group and should be very good defensively. The kids will learn to win a little, and maybe the incoming ex-Smokies can bring some of their mojo with them.
